Bwlchglas Lead Mine, Shallow Adit, April 2012

Visited with walsh.

HISTORY

The mine was developed on two veins possibly associated with the Hafan fault. Recorded working at the mine is very late in relationship to other mines in mid-Wales. And was being worked on a number of occasions from 1882 to 1916, producing 1240 tons of lead ore and 99 tons of zinc ore.

THE VISIT

1. View down towards Shallow adit stooping

2. Stooping in the Shallow adit. Not advisable to cross the water - its a false floor under there

3. A big hole covered by planks gives access via the rotting ladders to the Intermediate and then Deep adits. Distance from top to Deep adit level, circa 175 feet

4. View down the hole (as far as I was going anyway !)

5. Flooded winze on Shallow adit level. Deep, with a false floor so assumed to be even deeper. Could be up to 150 odd feet deep going on the access to lower adits

6. Continuing down the Shallow adit

7. Another trial but ends in the distance

8. Calcite takes over

9. And then there was light, the adit entrance beckons

10. And out to be met by this view

Thanks for looking.
